If Cold Symmetry can fix the bugs that plague some of the bosses, Mortal Shell II will go down as one of the best Soulslikes on the market right now. The improvements over the original make this one of the most impressive sequels I have ever experienced, with the changes being so significant that it feels almost like a reboot of the IP. The combat is fast and brutal, the exploration is rewarding, the build variety is deep, and the world is beautiful at times. All Soulslike fans need to play Mortal Shell II, as it understands exactly what makes this genre so beloved and executes those elements phenomenally.
The Sinking City 2 is an absolute triumph, not only due to its harrowing real-world origins, but because of how Frogwares masterfully crafted a survival horror game as their first product in the genre. Its story, world, and characters are enthralling and compelling, and by the end of my first run, I immediately began playing it again as I just wanted more of the game. For me, The Sinking City 2 is right alongside Resident Evil Requiem as being one of the best horror games of 2026, and I hope the game succeeds as I cannot wait to see what else Frogwares can do with the survival horror genre.
One step forward, one step back; that's the Madden NFL 27 way. There's clearly a lot of work that went into this year's version of Madden, especially compared to how lazy Madden NFL 26 felt. For the most part, it works out quite well, and I appreciate a lot of the new features. Unfortunately, they often fall short of what I'd expect. I don't know what it says about the current state of the franchise that I'm impressed with a game that's, ultimately, average at best. Maybe I'm just an NFL psycho who lives for seven hours of commercial-free football every day. Maybe that's why I'll keep playing this completely average-at-best game for far longer than I should. The best metaphor for Madden NFL 27 is that it features all the hype around one of those older Thursday Night Football games, only you realize that it's the Titans and Jaguars in a Color Rush game. You're excited that it's time for football, but are you really going to watch all 60 minutes of Charlie Whitehurst versus Blake Bortles in 2014?
Duskfade reminded me that a game doesn't need to reinvent the wheel to leave an impression. Sometimes, all it takes is a colorful world, satisfying movement, charming characters, and a genuine sense of passion behind every little detail to make you feel enthralled. There are certainly areas where its simplicity may not resonate with everyone, particularly with its straightforward combat and occasionally childish writing, but I never felt like those things took away from what Weird Beluga set out to accomplish. If anything, they made Duskfade feel sincerer. It's a game that wears its inspirations proudly while still having enough personality to stand on its own. After spending so much of my life playing games, it's always nice when something comes along that makes me feel like a kid again, wandering around a colorful world and seeing what might be hiding around the next corner.
Mistfall Hunter is a great game that's buried under some questionable design choices. In its best moments, its combat keeps you on the edge of your seat. In its worst moments, you'll constantly be wondering why the devs did things the way they did. All in all, if you're looking for an extraction title that doesn't involve the usual mechanics, then Mistfall Hunter is for you. Unfortunately, it also comes with a lot of problems, like poor UI, balance, and some interesting QoL choices.
Beast of Reincarnation is a fantastic ARPG that helps push Game Freak out of Pokémon’s shadow. Its expressive and deep combat system offers players a plethora of abilities that allow for long-running combos, intense encounters, and just overall a fun time. The inclusion of a command-based system was brilliant, as it adds a layer of strategy to the flow of combat and makes the experience feel unique compared to others in the genre. While not all bosses are memorable, each of them offers an exciting dance of parrying, dodging, and finding the right moment to strike. I had a blast with Beast of Reincarnation, and I can’t wait to jump into a second playthrough in New Game Plus.
Halo: Campaign Evolved brings back one of the coolest FPS experiences of all time, and it looks better than ever. Unfortunately, some PS5-specific headaches and bad performance issues are currently holding it back in major ways. At least half the missions on base PS5 have awful framerate issues, and the always-online, required linking of your PSN account to your Microsoft account to your Xbox Gamertag can lead to some truly migraine-inducing outcomes. I'm desperately hoping this is all ironed out ASAP, because this game will be a blast someday once it's all squared away. Until then, PS5 owners should be cautious.
Disgaea Mayhem is a solid entry into the action RPG genre for the franchise, successfully carrying over the nonsensical plot, core mechanics, and boundless progression that the series is celebrated for. Fans who love to min-max and grind all the way to level 9999 will find plenty to sink their teeth into here once again. However, newcomers and casual players might not find enough depth to keep them hooked, given that the main story wraps up in under 10 hours. If you strip away the familiar Disgaea elements, Mayhem is a rather uninspired action game. While it's a commendable effort, it doesn't quite hold a candle to more established JRPGs in the same space.
D-topia is a game well-worth playing for fans of approachable puzzlers, and gets surprisingly deep with the vast amount of sci-fi ideas it layers into the story and world-building. It's never exceptionally challenging, but still remains engaging throughout regardless. A couple of puzzle solution quirks and the occasional illusion of choice can be a bummer, but it doesn't diminish that, at its core, this game is a lovely time. Take a weekend and unwind with this one.
Dead or Alive 6 Last Round is the ultimate edition of 2019's DOA6. It offers absolutely no new content outside a pretty decent photo mode, so if you haven't played it yet, now is the time. If you already own DOA6, however, there's almost nothing here that can be recommended. For newcomers, Dead or Alive 6 Last Round is going to be an electric experience, and it's guaranteed to be one of the best fighters this year purely by the will of its savage gameplay. For vets, however, it may indeed be DOA.
Devil May Cry 5 Devil Hunter Edition brings the demon-slaying action of the franchise's peak to the Nintendo Switch 2. It is a fabulous port of the game, though it lacks any new content and features a rather mundane photo mode. If you've never experienced the game, there's absolutely no excuse not to jump in immediately. The over-the-top action and stylish cutscenes are just delightful, and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better game in the genre on Switch 2 than DMC5.
Gothic 1 Remake reinvents a timeless PC classic from the 2000s, and does so in a way that's bound to be controversial. The original Gothic was already a game that aged rather poorly, so remaking it in such a faithful way is admirable, but leaves the game without the ability to become what it could be. The core concept of Gothic is brilliant in its potential, but it was always held back by hardware limitations. The remake makes it look and sound nicer, but didn't go as far as it should have to take advantage of what it has.
LumenTale: Memories of Trey is among the best creature collector games we've gotten in years. That doesn't stop the game from feeling like it's collapsing under the pressure of just how different it's trying to be. Whether it's bug issues or performance issues, the game just reaches a point where it feels like work to play. There are a lot of genuinely great ideas here, and hopefully, things can get ironed out to be an experience that everyone on any platform can enjoy. If you enjoy creature collector games and want one that's going to be hours upon hours of learning and fun, then this one is for you.
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is extremely ambitious in scope compared to previous LEGO/mega-IP combos, and it succeeds tremendously in nearly everything it has set out to accomplish. The result is a version of Gotham that is a blast to explore, and is also stuffed to the brim with fun activities to complete long after the credits roll on the main story. The narrative plays it a little safe, but also functions as a Greatest Hits compilation of some of the Caped Crusader's best adventures spun out and connected together in highly enjoyable ways.
